The Return to Urban Living — Why More People Are Moving Back to Cities

Following years of suburban and rural migration during the pandemic, cities have been regaining popularity in recent years. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) reports that the percentage of people relocating to cities has increased to 16%. While this may seem small, it marks the highest level in a decade, making it a significant trend. (see graph below):

And data from BrightMLS supports this trend. A recent survey found that 1 in 5 (20.6%) buyers prefer city living.

So, what’s driving this return to urban areas? Here are the top three reasons people are leaving quiet suburbs for city life—you might even be tempted to sell your home with a big yard for an urban retreat.

  1. Vibrant Culture
Cities are known for their energy, entertainment, and sense of community. The pandemic put much of that on hold, but now, cities are thriving again. Whether it’s walking to a favorite coffee shop, visiting a gallery, attending a concert, or grabbing dinner nearby, urban living offers a dynamic lifestyle that many find appealing.

  2. Proximity to Work
While remote work remains, many companies are shifting to hybrid models or full-time office returns. Living closer to work reduces commutes and provides more opportunities for in-person networking, especially in industries that benefit from face-to-face interaction.

  3. Convenience
One of the biggest perks of city living is accessibility. Public transit, top-tier healthcare, and essential services are all within reach, making daily life easier and more efficient.

Thinking About Moving to the City?

If you relocated to the suburbs during the pandemic but miss city life, you may be wondering if moving back is possible with current mortgage rates and home prices.

Data from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) shows home values have increased 57.4% in the past five years. If you own a home in the suburbs, selling it could provide the equity needed to fund your move. While you may need to adjust to a smaller space, the lifestyle trade-off might be well worth it. Bottom Line

Cities are making a comeback. Whether it’s the culture, work convenience, or easy access to essentials, more people are choosing urban living.
