DeKalb was founded in 1856 and named after Baron Johann de Kalb, a German military officer who served in the American Revolution. The city gained fame as the birthplace of barbed wire, invented here by Joseph Glidden in 1873. Northern Illinois University, established in 1895, has shaped DeKalb into a dynamic college town. The Ellwood House Museum preserves the barbed wire baron’s Victorian estate.

DeKalb is the county seat of DeKalb County, located approximately 65 miles west of Chicago. The city is accessible via I-88, Route 38, and Route 23. While farther from Chicago than closer-in suburbs, DeKalb’s location along the I-88 corridor provides reasonable access to the metro area. Amtrak service is available in nearby Elburn.
