Aurora’s history stretches back to 1834 when settlers Joseph McCarty and Samuel McCarty established a community along the Fox River. Incorporated as a city in 1857, Aurora earned the nickname ‘City of Lights’ after becoming one of the first U.S. cities to use electric street lights in 1881. The Paramount Theatre, built in 1931, remains a stunning Art Deco landmark and active performing arts venue.
