History

Sandwich’s origins date to the mid-1800s when Almon Gage and politician “Long John” Wentworth worked to establish a railroad stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Originally called Newark Station, the community grew rapidly around the rail line. The annual Sandwich Fair, running since 1888, is one of the oldest and largest agricultural fairs in Illinois, drawing visitors from across the state every Labor Day weekend.
