DeKalb was founded in 1856 and named after Baron Johann de Kalb, a German military officer who served in the American Revolution. The city gained fame as the birthplace of barbed wire, invented here by Joseph Glidden in 1873. Northern Illinois University, established in 1895, has shaped DeKalb into a dynamic college town. The Ellwood House Museum preserves the barbed wire baron’s Victorian estate.
