Elmhurst was originally known as Cottage Hill when settlers arrived in the 1830s. Renamed Elmhurst in 1869 for the stately elm trees lining its streets, the city grew alongside the railroad into one of the premier western suburbs. Elmhurst University, founded in 1871, adds a collegiate atmosphere. The Elmhurst History Museum preserves the city’s story in the historic Glos Mansion.
