Joliet was founded in 1834 and named after the French-Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet. The city grew as a major transportation and industrial hub along the Des Plaines River and the Illinois & Michigan Canal. The historic Rialto Square Theatre, known as the ‘Jewel of Joliet,’ is a stunning 1926 performing arts venue. The city’s limestone heritage earned it the nickname ‘City of Stone and Steel.’
